S2E05 How To Use Standards Based Grading With The NGSS

Episode Summary

In this episode, Erin talks with high school teacher Vanessa Wentzloff about standards based grading in the NGSS classroom. Without a doubt, Vanessa Wentzloff will make you rethink your entire grading system.  She explains that traditional grading methods don't actually track what students know and what they don't.  Instead, the reinforce what she calls "the game of school".

Students who play the game well (turn in assignments on time, keep their notebook up to date, etc) get good grades.  Students who aren't good at the game don't do well, even if they understand the content.

Standard-based grading emphasizes what students know, and the not game of school.  Listen as Vanessa explains the benefits of standards-based grading and how to make this change in your classroom.
