Hear me out for a sec – in your classroom, you knew your students. You knew who could sit by whom, who you could count on for discussion, and who would ask for help when they needed it (and who wouldn’t!).
But this spring, a global pandemic threw all that out the window and launched you into uncharted territory — emergency remote learning.
You knew your students in the classroom. But you didn’t necessarily know them as remote learners.
The live training below was held at the peak of distance learning in the spring of 2020 inside the NGSS for Middle and High School Science Teachers Facebook Group. We were in the thick of it. That said, the lessons and ideas here are just as relevant now as many of us face the reality of some version of remote learning — whether it’s hybrid models, whether it’s an option being offered by your district, or whether you’re simple preparing for an inevitable shutdown if things get bad this winter.
The truth is, we don’t necessarily know what’s ahead, but we can’t rule out some sort of remote learning next school year. And with that in mind, we might as well prepare ourselves for the challenge — having experienced how hard it can be when it happens on the dime.
